• Glass is easy to clean and maintain whilst allowing lots of light through to keep bars feeling bright and open. Recycled glass countertops and decorative elements are becoming popular choices for eco-conscious operators.

The contrast between rough concrete walls and sophisticated lighting creates dramatic visual interest whilst appealing to diverse demographics.

Industrial luxe achieves a balance between modern edginess and sophistication, making it perfect for commercial bar design in urban settings. The style works particularly well in cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, where industrial heritage buildings offer ideal spaces for conversion.

3. WARM, RICH COLOUR PALETTES REPLACE COOL MINIMALISM

Playful wallpaper with bold patterns and colours transforms walls into works of art, perfect for creating Instagram-worthy backdrops. From geometric patterns to local artistic collaborations, these features create distinctive brand identities whilst supporting South African creative communities.

Living walls and biophilic elements are gaining popularity as both Instagram features and air quality improvements. Living walls improve air quality and create a cooler, more pleasant climate that requires up to 33% less air conditioning – a significant benefit in South Africa’s energy-conscious market.

Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel, has long been celebrated for its refined interiors and curated sense of place. Now, in a significant cultural move, the Cape Town landmark has deepened its artistic commitment with the expansion of its African art collection – thanks to a new partnership with the Norval Foundation.

This collaboration not only elevates the hotel’s visual storytelling but also reinforces its role as a patron of contemporary South African art. The newly acquired works, on extended loan, introduce powerful voices and diverse artistic styles, offering guests a richer, more layered aesthetic experience.

Among the notable additions are pieces by acclaimed artists Nicholas Hlobo, Dada Khanyisa, and Zanele Muholi. Hlobo’s work explores identity and heritage through complex textures and symbolic materials. Khanyisa, known for their mixed-media storytelling, brings vibrant, socially aware compositions that reflect urban life and intersectional identities. Muholi, internationally renowned for photographic work centred on gender, sexuality, and black identity, introduces a compelling emotional depth to the collection.

These artworks join a dynamic permanent collection that already includes prominent names such as Maja Marx, Lulama Wolf, Galia Gluckman, Tafadzwa Tega, Nabeeha Mohamed, and Teresa Kutala Firmino. Together, the pieces form a multi-voiced visual narrative that resonates throughout the hotel’s interiors.

Curator Lezanne van Heerden, who oversees the hotel’s collection, has been intentional in her approach. “It was important to me to show the diversity of artforms from the continent and to introduce truly unique works in a multitude of materials,” she explains. “I wanted to create a visual layering that invites guests to look closer and to feel the work.”

Van Heerden describes the atmosphere she’s cultivating as one of “gentle ambience and a sense of home.” She adds, “Artworks carry a vibration from the honesty of their creation. I want guests to experience the love and care that went into them. The pieces are meant to be visually engaging, but also comfortable to live with – nothing should feel intimidating.”

Indeed, while the works themselves are museum-quality, the Cape Grace has achieved what many in the industry strive for: integrating high art into a luxury setting without alienating the guest. The result is a warm, thoughtful environment where art becomes part of the everyday experience rather than a backdrop.

This evolving collection not only reaffirms Cape Grace’s commitment to authentic African storytelling through design, but also cements its place as a destination for both art lovers and design-conscious travellers.

Designing luxe spaces while incorporating a human touch or character requires great skill and attention and Motama Kitchens and Interiors has mastered exactly that.

The Johannesburg-based company was founded in 2017 by Aluwani Mutamani, a professional engineer with a passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces. Motama works closely with clients to understand their requirements, lifestyle, and budget before creating bespoke interior designs that reflect their unique style and taste. Over the years, the company has built a strong reputation for its attention to detail, craftsmanship, and personalised approach to every project. They service residential, retail, and commercial spaces, working with a diverse clientele seeking personalised and stylish interiors.

Ensuring every space receives a thoughtful and heartfelt touch, Aluwani explains that they are equally passionate about all interior spaces. They don’t have favourites when working with clients. Motama blends aesthetic principles with relational interaction to bring out the best in every design.

“The best design is a personalised design, a design tailored to reflect the client’s personality, lifestyle, and preferences. That’s why we work hand in hand with our clients: listening to their briefs, understanding their vision for the space, and asking questions to clarify their needs and preferences. We keep all communication channels open throughout the design process, using 3D visualisation tools to help clients see their spaces and provide input before implementation,” said Aluwani.

They also pride themselves on being receptive and flexible.

“We are always open to client feedback and input, and we incorporate amendments and adjustments to the designs accordingly. We are transparent about timelines, costs, and any challenges that may arise during implementation,” said founder Aluwani Mutamani.

She added that listening carefully to clients’ needs and understanding their vision is essential to creating a space that reflects their style and personality.
